Tripp lake

1. What does the author mean when she says on p. 244 "her face a mixture ...mastery"?

This quote reminds me of a race car driver. They are going high speeds so its natural to be scared and wonder if you can make your obstacles, but along with the fear you feel an adrenaline rush. The mixture makes you careful and cautious, yet have a mindset that has you determined you can do anything.

2. What is the "way forward"?

With the horse not rushing her because it can feel her hesitation she realizes she can move forward with out really being alone. She feels a strong connection in the horse and gains trust by the end. The crackle of the whip makes me think of the symbolization of a sudden wake up call, the world might be harsh but she cant give up.
