Tripp Lake

1. What does the author mean when she says on page 244, "her face a mixture of terror and exhilaration, the balanced combination that means only one thing: mastery."
As the author begins to describe her "humiliating" attempt to jump over the bar with the horse, she watches Kim, her instructor as she jumps the bar with the horse. She watched with amazement and and pays close attention to her face. Which she described as, "a mixture of terror and exhilaration". She feels as though this combination, is the combination of mastery. Kim has mastered the horse jump.

2. What is the "way forward"? (246)
At the end of the short story, essay, Lauren is practicing jumping...again. Her horse Rain would always sense her fear so he would not jump. Finally Lauren, was able to push through whatever it was that was in her way, and holding her back. "I did it. I found a way to move forward." I think this is where she was able to leave her fears behind and finally move forward.
