Tripp Lake

1. What does the author mean when she says on p. 244 "her face a mixture ...mastery"?
I believe that Lauren Slater is referring to the adrenaline rush that Kim receives when she makes the horse jump. The fact that Kim can balance terror and exhilaration means she that although she is aware of the apparent danger of the leap, she can still set the fear aside and execute the jump with fluidity. This is what Slater refers to as "mastery".
2.What is the "way forward"? (246)
I believe that the "way forward" is seeing past the fact that she doesn't care for her mother very much. She sees that Kim was right and she doesn't wish to hide from her fears for the rest of her life. Horse riding is her way to work through her problems.
