1. I believe that the quote "her face a mixture....mastery." is reffering to the exhileration that Kim experiences. The build up to this moment was nerve racking and when it finally happened she felt relieved and pleased that she accomplished the jump. This is what is referred to as the mastery.
2. The way forward is another way of saying not to look back to the past. It is a time to look into the future and to focus on what is happening in the present; not what already happened. Kim overcame her major fears and as a result never has to look back on such fears. She will be able to move on and eliminate more of the fears that she has.
